Laois County Novice Road Championships
The Laois Road Championships got underway on Sunday with Oughaval Ac hosting the event
in Fisherstown. St Abbans had both a ladies and Men’s team in action with the ladies getting
the day off to a great start. Deirdre Delaney led the team home running a great race to take
the gold medal. Audrey Byrne was next home for the club finishing strongly to take 3 rd place.
Next home was Cathy Lawlor who also had a great run. Karen Kavanagh finished off the
team in 6 th place, meaning the ladies won the team competition.
The Men’s race was next over 6km where a large field gathered to contest the race. While
Billy Ramsbottom was with the early leaders, himself and Paddy Dunne swapped places over
the final kilometre, with Billy just catching Paddy on the line finishing in 4 th place. Paddy
finished 5 th after working through the field, with Stephen Lawlor in 6 th and Pj Leonard
rounding out the scoring team in 12 th . Also competing on the day from the club were
William Kelly, Chris Frazer, Seamus Brennan, Barry Knowles and James Nolan. When the
Men’s scores were added together, St Abbans claimed silver medals to complete a
successful day. Well done to all involved and many thanks to the host club Oughaval AC for
organising the event.
